File - Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah shakes hands with MP Michel Aoun after the two signed a memorandum of understanding on Feb. 6, 2006. (The Daily Star/Mohammad Azakir)

This article was amended on Tuesday, December 29 2015

A previous version of this story incorrectly quoted Hezbollah politburo chief Sayyed Ibrahim Amin al-Sayyed as saying his party was "morally" committed to supporting Aoun. In fact, Sayyed said his party was "ethically" committed to supporting Aoun. The Daily Star apologizes for this mistranslation.
