BEIRUT: Education Minister Elias Bou Saab visited Baabda’s Women Prison Thursday, where one inmate sat for Lebanon’s official exams.

Bou Saab said in a news conference that he was very moved by the prisoner, who was crying as she relayed to him her hopes of pursuing an education after her release.

The education minister decried the deplorable conditions of the jail, saying “what I saw today is not something anyone should have to bear.”

“In all prisons, we should have conference rooms because people in prison have a right to learn,” he added.

The minister noted that he relayed this request to Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk, who he said is working hard to build new prisons.

Grade 9's official Brevet exams began on June 5, while the Baccalaureate exams for Grade 12 students started on June 10.

As for the technical Baccalaureate, the practical tests were held on May 11 and the written exams are scheduled for June 22.
