BEIRUT: Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil said the Syrian refugee crisis is threatening the Lebanese identity. Bassil also warned against settling Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
He adamantly refused the assimilation of Syrians into the Lebanese society claiming that would disintegrate what he called “our Lebanon.”
Bassil also touched on the nationality law that doesn’t allow women to pass on Lebanese citizenship to their spouses or children.
Bassil revealed he supports Lebanese women passing on nationality except when it comes to Syrians and Palestinians, saying it was a matter of safeguarding Lebanon.
His comments came at the closing ceremony of the Lebanese Diaspora Energy conference in New York Saturday, which aims at strengthening ties between Lebanese residing around the globe.
