While the nod could put some cards in Lebanon's hands, the latter could spur the international community into rushing to shore up the country against regional conflict. The shock factor of Hariri's resignation brought Lebanon's precarious position as a prime proxy hub in the regional struggle between Saudi Arabia and Iran center stage and prompted fresh agreement on the policy of dissociation and a high-level International Support Group for Lebanon meeting in Paris earlier this month. The emphasis is on Lebanon, though the impact of regional issues is evident in the text. The conferences will be a boon for Lebanon if the country sticks to dissociation. Ahead of the ISG meeting in Paris, diplomatic sources expressed concern over Lebanon's trajectory given high-ranking officials sounding support for Hezbollah and what this means for the role of the group and the international community's relationships with Lebanon over the next 5-10 years. Hariri and sources underscored again that this puts Lebanon in a difficult and dangerous position. It is another example of regional issues looming large, forming the proverbial elephant in every room where Lebanon's future is discussed, even as the emphasis from the ISG and the upcoming conferences is on building and supporting Lebanon's oft-cited "stability, security and sovereignty".
