BEIRUT: The man suspected of killing British woman Rebecca Dykes was a registered Uber driver with an existing criminal record, a security source told The Daily Star Monday.

The source confirmed that Dykes was raped. Her body was found Saturday along the Emile Lahoud road, also known as the Metn expressway, with clear evidence of strangulation.

Investigators believe the suspect, identified as Tarek H., may have murdered Dykes after realizing she was a foreign national, in an effort to cover up his crime.

When contacted by The Daily Star for comment on Monday, Uber confirmed that Tarek H. worked for the company.

A statement from an Uber spokesman read: "We are horrified by this senseless act of violence. Our hearts are with the victim and her family. We are working with authorities to assist their investigation in any way we can."
