BEIRUT: Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdel-Latif Derian Wednesday reiterated the importance of Lebanon's policy of dissociation.

"In 2011 we unanimously agreed to distance ourselves from the conflicts that surround us and today we must commit ourselves to this, for the sake of the country's safety," Derian said, speaking at Dar al-Fatwa to mark the occasion of the Prophet's Birthday, in a speech broadcast by local channel MTV.

The Prophet's Birthday will be celebrated Thursday.

Since returning to Lebanon and agreeing to put his resignation on hold, Prime Minister Saad Hariri has repeatedly spoke of the central importance of the government’s official policy of dissociation from regional conflicts.

During his initial resignation announcement, made Nov. 4 from Riyadh, Hariri cited Iran’s over-reach in the region, and Hezbollah’s increased engagement in conflicts throughout the Middle East.

The prime minister told French broadcaster CNews Monday that he would resign if Hezbollah did not prove receptive to dialogue on this, and other, issues.
