on Angola to release detained LebaneseThe arrest of Lebanese nationals in Angola as part of a nationwide crackdown on the country's diamond industry prompted Speaker Nabih Berri Thursday to call on Angola's president to personally intervene. A statement from Berri's office said the reasons for the arrests were "unknown"; however, a Lebanese businessman in Angola confirmed to The Daily Star that the arrests came as part of the crackdown.Berri contacted caretaker Foreign Minister Gebran Bassil about the matter, as well as General Security chief Abbas Ibrahim, whom he asked to contact Angolan authorities.When asked by The Daily Star for further comment, Berri's office had no further details to add.
