BEIRUT: The National Social Security Fund announced Monday that it has terminated its contract with the American University of Beirut Medical Center, after AUBMC allegedly violated the social security law.

NSSF head Mohammad Karaki announced that the decision had been made based on a report carried out by a hospital supervisory body, according to an NSSF statement carried by the state-run National News Agency. Karaki issued two decisions that will cut advance funding starting Feb. 12, it said.

AUBMC posted on its Facebook page Monday evening, reassuring staff and students that "business will continue as usual with no interruption of NSSF coverage."

While the statement did not detail the nature of the violations, local media have reported that a case was registered Feb. 8 to investigate the embezzlement of funds, forgery, fraud and false statements.
