BEIRUT: The Lebanese Army warned Wednesday it will respond to Syrian violations of Lebanese airspace after one man was wounded when Syrian helicopters fired rockets into the Bekaa border town of Arsal.

“Army units deployed in the region and took the necessary defensive measures to respond immediately to any similar violation,” a statement from the Lebanese Army said.

The statement said a helicopter coming from Syria “violated Lebanese airspace” over Arsal, firing two rockets into the town’s square.

One Arsal resident was wounded and several buildings sustained damage in the 1:50 p.m. attack, the statement added.

Security sources told The Daily Star that the Syrian helicopters fired six rockets into Arsal, wounding one person.

The sources said three homes were damaged in the attack near the Arsal municipality.

Syrian Army forces and rebels have launched rockets into Lebanese territory for months that are tied to the fighting in Syria.

The attacks have killed and wounded a number of Lebanese in border villages and towns.
