Using the same logic then, why can't President Trump today declare that he would also be willing to have a kebab, or whatever, with Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with the aim of peacefully resolving all outstanding disputed issues beyond the nuclear question – thorny items that include Iran's ballistic missile program, Tehran's meddling in the internal affairs of Arab states, Hezbollah, and the Islamic Republic's implacable hostility to the very existence of the state of Israel? Despite its demonstrated ideological and strategic intransigence, Iran has shown that when it is presented with a serious negotiating partner, or set of partners as with the nuclear agreement, Tehran does sit pragmatically at the table and negotiate until a mutually acceptable deal is reached. Incidentally, it would not be smart of Washington to scuttle the JCPOA, better known as the Iran nuclear deal. Concretely, this holds out the potential of the total lifting of all sanctions placed on Iran; the normalization of diplomatic relations, trade, cultural and scientific exchanges, and much more with Iran; and culminating in the overall acceptance of Iran as a pillar of regional stability instead of the subversive rogue state that many now perceive it to be.
